Where not to go in Baltimore

Who would’ve imagined that one of the most dangerous cities in the world could be found on US soil? Due to recent events, the police has issued a few warnings, letting people know what neighborhoods to stay away from, in case they have to travel to this part of the country. And because we think people should stay safe, we’ve compiled a list with some of the shadiest places where you could actually get hurt in this beautiful city.

Fairfield Area

Baltimore’s neighborhood can conjure up too many stereotypes to count them. This place has hipster areas, preppy streets, colleges where college kids thrive, and of course, dangerous ghettos.

And while the city itself consistently ranks as one of the best places to raise a family, this neighborhood is not all rainbows and sunshine, as it has a high crime rate, especially when compared with richer areas. Although it is a well-known fact that some neighborhoods aren’t as fabulous as others, this one stands out in the worst way, so avoid it if possible.

Monument Street Area

Experts have examined 54 of Baltimore’s most notable neighborhoods to find out the scariest places to live. And Monument Street Area didn’t quite measure up to Baltimore’s respectable reputation. Interestingly, experts also realized that perception is far worse than the actual rate of crime.

However, they suggested taking a taxi and not the bus while you are in this particular place. Also, avoid standing for too long in one place or looking suspicious. Police officers also think it might be a good idea to use credit cards instead of cash while visiting Baltimore. Oh, and try not to get into any fight!

Orangeville

This neighborhood has it all: high unemployment, low median income, a high population density, and drugs. No wonder it is perceived to be one of the worst places to buy a house in this city. It is thought to be the neighborhood with the ‘Worst Score’ rank when compared with other parts of Baltimore.

You should not intentionally set out to see the neighborhoods where the riots occurred a while ago, especially if you don’t want to find yourself in a patently lousy part of the city over the course of a weekend trip. This area also has frequent blackouts, so it might not be a bad idea to take a LED flashlight to help you find the right way in the dark.

Dundalk Cityside

Baltimore, once a bare piece of land, is the biggest city in Maryland and one of the largest in the US. Although there are now plenty of fun things to see and do in the city, you should be aware there are also warnings to heed, and dangers to quickly avoid to stay safe. And visiting Dundalk Cityside at night is one of them.

Realistically, you can’t really expect all the neighborhoods to be friendly and fantastic, but this area is the complete opposite of what you would expect a US neighborhood to be, so do not travel there all by yourself.

Greenmount East

During the day, the area is safe, especially in the popular tourist areas. If you really want to explore it, it is best to stick to the destinations around the harbor. Experts say the inner harbor is the best place to walk around and thoroughly explore while solo traveling.

At night, the main thing to keep in mind is not to use any outside ATMs, unless it is an emergency and they are well lit. Likewise, stay in highly populated areas, like a mall, unless you know there’s a policeman nearby. Don’t forget that crimes are committed in the downtown area at night time, including muggings and drug use.

Top 5 places to avoid in Los Angeles

People are drawn to visiting Los Angeles because it’s considered to be one of the top cities in the world where the majority of actors, singers, and show-business personalities live. Plus, it’s the place where all major movies and TV shows are shot. It’s impossible to get bored in this incredible city.

However, if you dare to venture through long lines of crowds to get a perfect capture to brag about it on social media, you might want to consider a few things. Los Angeles has some particular areas that you should avoid if you don’t want to compromise your little getaway.

Gang-Plagued Areas

When planning a visit to Los Angeles, keep in mind that this place is an extremely under-manned (when it comes to police) city, meaning that there is only one police officer for 426 residents and only 19 divisions to cover an entire area of 100 neighborhoods.

Even though there are numerous gangs in LA, these are concentrated in locations far from the tourist attractions. Typically, gangs can be found in Downtown Los Angeles, Culver City, Venice, Inglewood, Santa Monica, and East Los Angeles.

If you book a staying at a hotel located in one of these areas, ask the concierge to help you with transportation to the famous entertainment and tourist places in Los Angeles. Also, check whether the accommodation facility has an outdoor security camera so that you can have a proof in case someone attempts to rob you.

South Central Los Angeles

This place has a lot of bad history due to the infamous 1992 riots between white police officers and the African American population. Because of these incidents, the entire neighborhood, as well as other local businesses, were severely damaged.

Stay away from areas like Watts and Compton because they are known for the high number of murders that have happened here. From 2007 until present day, there have been reports of 407 killings along with numerous other types of crimes.

East Los Angeles

You can get a clue if you have stepped in a gang area by looking for graffiti or other signs on the buildings. If you get lost, and you manage to end up in East Los Angeles, it’s best to be smart and go to a police station or enter a brightly-lit store with a motion sensor light installed.

However, before going outside, get a GPS and don’t go on these streets that aren’t safe for tourists.

If you intend to rent a car, get something less flashy or expensive. This way, you won’t be noticed and draw unwanted attention if you don’t know your way around Los Angeles.

Venice

Venice is indeed a fantastic beach with famous residents like Dennis Hopper or Anjelica Huston. It’s understandable that you might want to go there and get yourself a five-star tan. The vibe in this place is incredibly bohemian and artistic, and people seem to be worry-free.

However, there’s a dark side to this paradise, and that is the Oakwood gang community which is rather strong with many members. It’s not a great idea to walk alone at night in Venice, especially on the beach or next to a park.

Homeless gathering points

One of the most dangerous places in Los Angeles is without any doubts the Skid Row area. On these sidewalks, many homeless people live so don’t open your purse or wallet or flash your phone.

Even though they are mostly harmless, poverty is a difficult situation and sometimes stealing from tourists is their only way to survive.

5 dangerous places to avoid in Brazil

Brazil is the largest country in South America and one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Over 6 million people visited Brazil last year, its tourist attractions ranging from amazing nature like beaches and rainforests, to architectural gems like the capital city, Brasilia. The Carnival in Rio alone attracts over one million tourists every year.

There are some things, however, you should be aware of when visiting Brazil as it isn’t really the kind of country you just put your yoga pants and yoga socks on and can relax.

Tourists are vulnerable to falling prey to street crimes, especially thefts and robberies. It’s very important to always stay on guard, avoid going out at night, and always keep an eye on your belongings. Only take a small amount of cash with you when you’re out sightseeing, and leave expensive possessions in your hotel’s safe or at home, including jewelry and expensive phones and cameras.

If you decide to rent a car, keep the doors and windows closed and locked at all times and when you need to withdraw money, look for an indoor ATM in a well-lit area. You should also be a bit careful when it comes to the locals — occasionally, some might seem helpful with the only purpose of stealing from tourists.

All these general safety tips shouldn’t keep you from visiting such an amazing country, but do keep in mind to exercise caution and try to stay away from these five places.

Favelas

The Brazilian slums, favelas, are pretty much some of the most dangerous places in the world you can go to. Because it’s better to be safe than sorry, you should just stay away from the favelas.

There is a lot of violence and aggression going on in the Brazilian slums and they’re mostly controlled by drug cartels which have their own private armies under their command. One such cartel is Red Command. In Rio, avoid going to Vila Cruzeiro. This favela might look like it’s owned by the church, but it’s actually run and controlled by drug lords.

Salvador

For nature lovers, this is one of the most desirable Brazilian destinations. It’s also a very good spot for taking photos for your Instagram feed, being a city with a rich colonial heritage. That is if you are willing to risk your life for those photos.

Homicide rates are off the chart in this place, which is now one of Brazil’s most violent cities. Prison gangs at war with each other and drugs have made Salvador a simply dangerous place. Even the Brazilians will tell you not to go to Salvador during your South American trip.

Recife

Another colonial jewelry, another dangerous place. Recife it the fifth biggest metropolitan area in Brazil and it has been called “Venice of Brazil” because of its beautiful canals and bridges and picturesque tortuous rivers.

It might sound heavenly, but it’s quite the opposite: Recife has one of the highest murder rates per capita in the whole of Brazil. It’s extremely dangerous especially on the weekend and in the hours after the sun sets, when it’s easier for culprits to sneak around and escape unseen.

Mato Grosso

Mato Grosso is actually a huge plain running throughout Brazil and even though it’s so enormous in size, it has similar crime rates to large cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo.

Homicides are a big part of the violent crimes in this region which has one of the highest assault rates in Brazil. The number of violent and non-violent crimes in Mato Grosso make it a dangerous area to visit. If you really want to go, you have to be extra careful and take all necessary precautions.

Caracarai

Women travelers and families with children are especially advised to stay away from this small Brazilian city in the state of Roraima. Young children and girls can fall victim to human trafficking and sexual exploitation which are some of the most common crimes occurring in Caracarai.

Truck drivers are usually the perpetrators when it comes to the widespread sexual exploitation of the underaged in Brazil. They generally lead their exploits at local rest-stops. You would want to avoid this area if you are traveling alone or with young children.

Top 5 dangerous places in Florida

If you’re planning a trip to Florida either because you’ve never been or you’re considering retiring there in the upcoming years, it might be a good idea to make a list of places you can go to and those you should avoid. Even if the United States is generally considered a somewhat safe place, there are cities or areas you should steer clear of, and some of them are located in the great state of Florida.

While we don’t advise you to check out these destinations, we would like to make it clear that we don’t have anything against them or the people who live there. However, they might not make the best choice for those who travel alone, are women, or know little to nothing with regard to what they’re supposed to avoid in these parts.

Daytona Beach

Despite its incredible sights, this city scores as one of the most dangerous ones in Florida and the whole of the United States of America. It’s got an appalling crime rate and violent ones are more or less frequent. In fact, one in every three crimes is violent in this location.

On top of everything, Daytona Beach has an annual crime rate of 76 cases out of 1000 people, so it appears that it’s less safe than 98% of all other cities in the United States right now.

Palatka

There are two main reasons you could consider going to Palatka, and they are the fact that here’s where the Florida Azalea Festival takes place annually and the town has a somewhat small population of just 10,000 individuals. If you think that this low number is what makes it safe, you’re mistaken, though.

It has practically no social life at all, but what makes it risky is that every year over 600 crimes are reported despite the 10,000 residents living their life in the town. 58 crimes per 1,000 people is a lot, so it’s only safer than roughly 4% of the country. If you’re wondering about the high crime rate, it might be useful for you to know that Palatka has one of the highest unemployment rates in the States and it is higher than the national average.

Immokalee

This is another small city you might want to avoid. The poverty in the area is what drives people to crime, and even though violent ones are less prevalent compared to other areas in Florida, you might get mugged or threatened if you decide that visiting Immokalee is a risk you might want to take.

Eighty-five percent of those who live here do not speak English, which is another reason for the heavy unemployment issue. Teenage pregnancy and delinquency are common in this town, and that’s because a third of its whole population is aged under 18. Besides, only 3 to 4% of those who live in Immokalee have a bachelor’s degree.

Fort Pierce

Based on the number of reported crimes that we came across, it appears that the likelihood of you becoming a victim of one in this city is 1 to 17. While it might be less violent compared to other Florida destinations, there are several issues that the town should have to address in order for it to become an attractive tourist location.

For one, only 13% of those aged twenty-five or older have a Bachelor’s degree. At the time this article was written, there was no company owned by Asians or African Americans in the area, which should give you a pointer as to what other issues the city might be suffering from.

Miami Beach

Probably the most dangerous place in the entirety of Florida, Miami Beach certainly doesn’t seem risky at all if you were to consider its breathtaking views. But the fact of the matter is that both the rape rate and the violent crime rates here are more than double the national average.

Both property crime and thefts are more than three times the value of the national average. So if you want to travel to Miami Beach all by yourself and you’re carrying your valuables with you, you’d better think again. If you do have friends living there, you could hit them up so that they go along on your quests. You might even want to enjoy yourself on a griddler party in their company, who knows?

Where not to go in Mexico

For decades, Mexico has been a popular destination amongst Northern Americans fascinated by the beautiful beaches, the good beer, the ancient civilizations and, of course, the cheap prices. Nevertheless, Mexico remains a relatively safe country although there are numerous places you should avoid, especially if you’re a foreign tourist.

Although the country continues to be a top destination for Spring breaks and traditional bachelor parties, you shouldn’t get fooled by the promises. The crime rate is still high, especially in the country’s capital, Mexico City. The State Department even issued a “do not travel” warning for the American citizens to avoid these Mexican destinations.

Tijuana

Just south of California you’ll find the border city of Tijuana, one of the main tourist destinations for American citizens. It’s one of the closest Mexican cities to the American border so, in theory, it should be a safe zone. Unfortunately, this isn’t so as the city is a top destination mainly for drug cartels and drug dealers.

Although the crime rate has decreased in the past few years thanks to the continuous cooperation between the two countries, Tijuana remains a rather unsafe place. The war between rival drug cartels continues to scare people off, while the gruesome violence doesn’t show signs of ending anytime soon.

Ciudad Juárez

Just outside El Paso, Texas, the Mexican city of Juarez became the most dangerous city in the country in the past few years. There are no less than four international entry points connecting the two countries, so there’s plenty of space for drug dealers, cartels, and organized crime groups to operate.

Just ten years ago Juarez was declared the most violent city in the world, mainly due to the fight between rival drug cartels. The crime rate drastically diminished in the early 2010s, especially because the Sinaloa Cartel managed to defeat its enemy, the Juarez Cartel.

Nevertheless, the city remains one of the unsafest in the entire American continent, and it was credited as even more violent and dangerous than cities like Sao Paulo in Brazil or Bogota in Colombia.

Acapulco de Juarez

Commonly known as Acapulco, this Mexican city is a famous destination due to its astonishing beaches and breathtaking sunsets. It’s also one of the country’s oldest beach resorts, so it comes as no surprise that it still triggers the interest of American tourists.

Back in the 1950s, it used to be a glamorous destination and most A-list stars, including Elizabeth Taylor or John F. Kennedy Junior, spent plenty of time under the hot Mexican sun.

Unfortunately, the increasing crime rate and violence rate has drastically diminished the touristic potential of this area, turning Acapulco into a city that should be avoided. Beaches are left deserted, bars are shutting down, while the remaining touristic areas are constantly patrolled by police forces.

Los Cabos

Although many official statements from the Mexican government included Los Cabos in a list of the safest places to go in Mexico, recent data doesn’t support this affirmation. Furthermore, Los Cabos was listed as the city with the highest murder rate in the world in 2017, with over 365 homicides in the past year.

Los Cabos is also an extremely popular tourist destination due to its turquoise waters and endless beaches with fine sand. Unfortunately, it’s not safe to walk the streets of the city and many recent visitors have complained about the increasing number of robberies and other minor crimes, alongside violent crimes and notorious drug cartel fights.

La Paz

The capital of the state Baja California Sur, La Paz ranked as the sixth most dangerous city in the world in 2017. In fact, the entire region of Baja California Sur has experienced a massive increase in violence and crimes in the past year, including the previously mentioned Los Cabos.

La Paz remains a place where active crime scenes happen on a regular basis and these mainly imply the most powerful organized crime groups in the country. Unfortunately, the trend of rising criminality will maintain in the next few years, which will lead to devastating consequences on Mexico’s 20-billion dollar annual tourism business.

Top 5 most dangerous cities in the U.S.

If you have decided to go on a tour of the most appealing cities in the United States, but you don’t want to put your life at risk while doing so, this list of dangerous cities in the U.S. might come in handy. So, take a good look at it and start re-organizing your next trip!

Detroit

Although you might have heard that the crime rates in Detroit have decreased, this city is still one of the most violent places out there. However, it is worth saying that the unsafe areas in this city are usually located far from the tourist attraction sector.

In this town, one should pay attention to pickpockets and bag snatchers as they are quite numerous, even in tourist attraction locations and in the means of public transportation. The chance to get mugged in Detroit is medium. Still, usually, most of those that fall victim to muggers are not physically hurt if they cooperate with their assailant.

Last but not least, while here, pay attention to scammers. Also, you should always withdraw money from well-known banks and hotels, so that the risk of you being the victim of a credit card scam is avoided.

Baltimore

As the largest city in Maryland, Baltimore is another tourist-attractive city that is not particularly very safe. According to the specialists, this town is safe to visit during the day, just as long as you stick to the central areas around the harbor. However, keep in mind that, at night, the downtown area is well known for its various crimes.

As expected, in Baltimore, pickpocketing and purse snatching are quite common, as thieves usually target tourist locations as well as public transportation. The prospect of you being the victim of a scam is also quite high, which is a reason why you should not trust those asking you for help.

Boston

Another city that you should be careful when visiting is Boston. As one of the most famous towns in the U.S., Boston is filled with attractions that are worth visiting, but all those that consider doing so should also pay attention to their own safety.

From this point of view, you should know that most crimes that occur here are drug-related. While here, you should avoid non-central areas that are prone to such activities. What is more, the risk of running into pickpockets is medium, and, with a little bit of caution, you should be fine.

Additionally, we recommend that you pay attention to scammers. Besides, the public transportation in this city is generally safe and reasonably priced.

Memphis

The house of blues music, Memphis is another tourist destination that some consider dangerous. This city is famous because this is where Graceland, the home of Elvis, is located. Similarly to the other places that we have talked about, the city of Memphis is generally safe if you stay in the central area. Therefore, if you avoid the marginal crime-ridden neighborhoods, you should be fine.

Still, it is worth noting that in this city there are numerous pickpockets. Because of this, it is advisable that you keep your belongings in a safe place and away from view. The risks of terrorist attacks here are low.

On top of that, although the best way to travel in Memphis is by car, the specialists have determined that the public transportation services in the town are safe. Yet, you should pay attention to muggers, especially during the night.

Chicago

Last but not least, the Windy City is also a location that you should visit with caution. Although the city per se is overall safe, there are plenty of rough neighborhoods that you should avoid visiting. Differently to other places, the chance of having your belongings stolen by pickpockets here is not that high.

However, Chicago is home to many muggers. Because of this, you should show precaution before displaying your belongings in public. Although the city has not been targeted by terrorist groups recently, you should stay alert to what the authorities recommend.

Even more so, if you are a woman, you will be happy to know that Chicago is safe for female travelers. Also, before you book your next flight here, go online and check the weather as Chicago is occasionally hit by blizzards.

Top 5 dangerous places for women travelers

Bad things are happening in the world. Women are killed and kidnapped on a daily basis. However, you shouldn’t let that scare and prevent you from traveling. On the contrary, it should inspire you to do some research and to find out which are the most dangerous countries you probably should avoid going to.

And to help with that, we’ve created this list, which we tried to make as comprehensive as possible. Take this travel information with a pinch of salt, as things are always changing from one year to another. And to be completely transparent, a terrorist attack could happen anywhere, so these countries are just unfortunate.

We tried to cumulate many factors, from the attitude towards females to the freedom of speech, and most importantly, we decided to take into consideration the way police treats women and if their voices matter just as much as male ones do. If you are from the U.S., these things might seem shocking, but unfortunately, they are a reality for many throughout the world.

The most dangerous place, who did end up on top of our list for a reason, is Egypt. The U.S. Department of State even issued a travel warning. It’s not dangerous for females per se, but it’s a scary place to visit due to the frequent terrorist attacks that happen there and for the increase in activity by groups such as ISIS. These groups kidnap people, raid churches and even murder people in plain sight in some remote cases.

However, some travelers say that this notoriety is a bit unfair, because not all Egypt is like that. Cairo and almost all larger cities are rather safe and amazing to explore without anyone bothering you. Egypt is a fascinating place, marked by millennia of history and pharaohs, filled with attractive destinations like The Pyramids, The Sphinx, and thousands more.

At number two is another country that is dangerous for solo travelers, but not so much for groups. Morocco received a reputation not because of terrorist attacks, but because of petty crime. Pickpocketing, street robberies, burglaries, purse-snatching are frequent, and people advise that you use a travel agency for everything or have at least a local to show you around.

Another advice that will help you stay under the radar is to wear clothes that cover your entire body and not to flash your valuables like phones and laptops. Moroccans are friendly and helpful people, but like in most underdeveloped countries, stolen goods sell well. However, friendly as they may be, you should expect catcalling.

Travelers also pinpointed Jamaica as an unsafe place for single women. Resorts are generally safer, but if you leave the comfort of their perimeter, you might find yourself dealing with unsolicited attention – in a very bad way. Especially in the cities of Montego Bay and Kingston. Like many cultures, Jamaicans can be homophobic, so if you’re traveling with your partner, be discreet.

At number four we have a surprising, yet super popular place. The Bahamas has been a favorite with U.S. citizens for years. Why is it so dangerous, you ask? Because this chain of islands has seen an increase in armed robberies and assault, not only from locals but from tourists too. More and more flock to the New Providence each year, and along with money, some bring violence with them.

It is the price the island nation has to pay for its popularity. A United Nations report said that it has one of the highest incidences of sexual assault in the whole Caribbean. Bahamas’ government has promised to invest more in protecting both groups and to improve its laws.  People pointed out that the police force has to be more efficient in catching criminals.

And lastly, we have our neighbor, Mexico. The country is blamed for the fault of just a tiny percentage of its population, including drug dealers and thieves, but that didn’t stop the State Department to advise that travelers should avoid Mexico in its entirety.

However, tourist flock there by the millions. More than 35 million people visit places like Cancun and Mexico City each year, and they don’t seem to have too many problems. The country has a low crime rate, but the capital has many sketchy neighborhoods that you’d better avoid if you are a female, especially late at night.
