Top 5 places to avoid in Hawaii

If you’re planning on grabbing your favorite telescopic fishing rod and enjoying a day in the sun on the Hawaiian islands, you might want to double check a few of the spots in this tourist destination.

It’s common knowledge that crime rates in crowded areas are high, but according to recent research, it appears that this area, in particular, has experienced a decrease in this field at least in the past years.

We agree that Hawaii is a pleasant and safe destination to visit, but we want to warn you with regard to a few of the spots that you should avoid to stay out of trouble, especially if you’re traveling alone.

This is one of the areas where crime rates are unusually high compared to the other parts of Hawaii, almost 22 percent higher, as statistics show. To avoid being the victim of pickpocketing, petty theft, and other criminal behavior, we suggest you avoid walking here late at night, after dark.

One of the reasons for this increase in crime is the drug use in this area, which always brings along trouble. This neighborhood is known as the armpit of Oahu, and it’s rated as one of the most dangerous parts of the islands.

Kipu Falls

Instead of discussing other areas that are prone to crime and violent encounters, we’ve chosen to address one of the tourist spots that is the cause of around five deaths per year.

We’re of course talking about the Kipu Falls, with beautiful scenery that is unfortunately too dangerous to be observed from a close distance, and due to this fact, tourist access is prohibited in this area.

Unless you’re a professional hiker or you have some special permit, we doubt the local authorities will allow you to enter this secluded area.

This neighborhood might not seem dangerous at first sight, but that’s only because it looks like a regular hometown. The problem is the people that live here are victims of poverty and low-quality living conditions, which result in an increased rate in property crime.

We suggest you keep your personal belongings close while passing through this area, and avoid renting a place here because you can risk being robbed while you’re away from your accommodation.

This famous holiday destination is not the safest place you could be in while you’re visiting Hawaii, which might come as a disappointment for most people. The US Department of Justice has admitted that this area struggles with drug traffic, being one of the critical commercial harbors and providing access into the country.

Also the fact that it’s a large city with many inhabitants doesn’t help. The local police struggle to maintain the order because it’s hard to keep track of visitors with so many tourists around.

However, there are safer spots and dangerous ones. Most of the neighborhoods are not as bad, but we suggest you steer clear of Kalihi and Chinatown, especially after dark.

Olivine Pools

Do not allow yourself to be fooled by the picturesque scenery of these pools. Although the landscape is breathtakingly beautiful and almost invites you to enjoy a quick swim, the path that leads to this area is slippery and has caused many injuries over the years.

A lot of tourists drowned here due to the strength of the currents and the rogue waves, and many others have been victims of various injuries. If you’re not an experienced swimmer, we suggest you do not enter this dangerous area.

Where not to go in New York

Visiting New York can be very exciting. There are a lot of places for you to see, especially plenty of areas you have probably seen only in movies or photos. It is clearly an opportunity that’s not to be missed. However, there are some places you’d want to avoid going to, mainly if they’re swarming with tourists and masses of people that bump into each other.

While some of the areas that we will be talking about in the following paragraphs might be on your list of places to see, you’d better listen to our recommendations and visit them at the right times of the day or of the year.

Without any further ado, let’s get straight into the places where you wouldn’t want to go while traveling through the Big Apple.

Everybody’s heard of SoHo at least once in their lifetime. It is considered the shopping Mecca of New York and could provide you with plenty of things to see. But there are still some dangers and disadvantages that you expose yourself to when visiting this part of Manhattan.

First of all, the alleys of this neighborhood are usually home to muggers that will definitely try to rob you as soon as the sun sets down. Therefore, it’s best to avoid this area as the night settles in.

On the other hand, most people have recommended places like the Lower East Side and Williamsburg if you are looking for a better shopping experience. This is because SoHo can offer you only mainstream accessories and clothing, which some of us are trying to avoid.

Little Italy

You may fancy tasting some of the Italian cuisine you’ve heard so much about, but the good days of Little Italy are long gone. Now, the only type of food you can find here is one that’s overpriced and not satisfying at all.

Luckily for you, New York has two Little Italies, so you can visit the one on the Arthur Avenue of the Bronx.

Times Square

We know, this is one of the locations you wanted very much to see, but not all hope is gone. The main disadvantage when reaching Times Square are the enormous tourist crowds that fill this area entirely. In such a crowded place it’s likely that you get pickpocketed and left without any money to buy souvenirs – which are as overpriced as the food in Little Italy.

However, if you really want to get a shot of Times Square, you should plan on visiting on an early weekday, when the crowds are not as big as during the rest of the week. And, of course, keep your possessions close to you to avoid any unpleasant scenarios.

Also, if you happen to have children with you, you should consider equipping them with a GPS kid tracker as they might get lost easily in the tourist crowds. The last thing you want to happen is to lose your child among the people of Times Square.

Any lesser-known neighborhoods

Life in New York is safe in general – it is deemed as one of the safest cities in the States. Still, that doesn’t mean you should wander around and get into every shady alley or neighborhood you might find. The central parts of the city are always safe, but straying off the beaten path will lead you to danger.

There’s the risk of you encountering muggers and getting robbed if you travel to any lesser-known neighborhoods, so it’s better you stay in the areas that are recommended for tourists. Moreover, you should avoid traveling after dawn, especially in parks – yes, even in Central Park. These areas may get filled fast with all sorts of suspicious people that might take their chance and try to rob you.

5 places to avoid in San Francisco

San Francisco is a great place to visit. There are many tourist attractions worth seeing. If you happen to be in the area, you should definitely spend at least a day there. However, even the most wonderful city has its dark side.

If you are planning to visit San Francisco, do not start your trip without being prepared, since you may return home totally disappointed. You have to know the places to avoid in this city in order for you not to have bad experiences or something even worse.

Here are the top 5 places to avoid in San Francisco.

  1. Bayview

Bayview is an area in the city which is characterized as having some of the highest rates of crime. If you happen to be there, you may get your bag stolen, but you may also hear shootings because the area is very dangerous due to gun violence. It is said that the crime rate in this neighborhood is 161% higher than the average.

  1. Outer Mission

Outer Mission is a neighborhood in San Francisco which is located on the south edge of the city. It is not as dangerous as the previous area we have described, but, still, the crime rate is 98% higher than the average. You may risk visiting it at daytime, but never go to such a place when it gets dark. You do not want to return home with trauma.

  1. The Tenderloin

Yes, it is a touristic area. Yes, it may seem that nothing might happen there. But we will tell you the contrary. Even if the place is full of great restaurants, activities and shops, there are also a lot of homeless people that may get very violent and you may be robbed. Local people already know that this area is dangerous, but tourists are not aware. This is why you have to inform yourself before visiting San Francisco.

We would recommend you not to take a lot of money with you if you happen to be in The Tenderloin. Leave your laptops, tablets, and money at the hotel. Your car isn’t safe, either. Take all the valuable things out of it, including even the convertible car seat, if you have kids. People rob and sell everything they can.

  1. Sunnydale

This small neighborhood called Sunnydale is situated between McLaren Park and the Cow Palace. It has a high crime rate, and it is said to be a very depressive and dangerous place in San Francisco. It is better to avoid and choose a safer place instead, like the Castro.

  1. The Bay Area Rapid Transit

This is San Francisco’s subway system, and it is also known as BRAT. It is very useful if you want to get from one place to another. However, not all stations are safe. There are locations that are full of homeless people that may rob you if you do not pay attention.

Some of the stations that have to be avoided are Civic Center Station, 16th & Mission Station, Lake Merritt Station, and 24th & Mission Station. Or, if you still happen to be there, make sure your bag is safe, and there are no suspicious people around you.

We know that it is very exciting to visit a city like San Francisco since it is known for its beautiful and entertaining places. But be careful not to get too excited and forget about safety. These big cities are some of the most dangerous in the world.

5 areas to avoid when visiting Athens

Athens is a cultural hotspot, considered to be, by many, the birthplace of civilization and democracy. It is the capital of Greece and the country’s largest city. In 2018 Athens was visited by over 32 million tourists, thus becoming one of Europe’s most visited cities, a major tourist destination.

If you plan to visit Athens as well, you should take into consideration that not all the city’s areas are as safe as you might expect. Depending on the situation, you may want to avoid the following ones.

Omonoia is a neighborhood that has a bad reputation when it comes to safety for tourists. Even locals advise avoiding this area, especially at night. Omonoia is well known for beggars, prostitutes and pickpockets, so if it happens that your route takes you through there, keep an eye out for your valuables.

If your accommodation happens to be located in this particular area, keep your important belongings in the room’s safe, avoid going for walks during the night hours and carry your personal documents and money in your inner chest pockets.

Even if you are a charitable person, refuse anyone who is looking for charity and does not give money to beggars. All these could be scams and you have no way of knowing.

If you have children with you it is a good idea to avoid bringing them there. Even in the daytime and in plain sight there are people who use drugs. This can be a terrifying thing to watch for tourists who are not used to Omonoia and especially for the little ones.

Specific places to be avoided are 3 September St. and the roads right of the National Archaeological Museum. Another major street that has become notorious for drugs and crime is Sofokleous St.

To reduce the chances of becoming a pickpocketing or scam victim, you must not act like a tourist. Hide your camera and try not to be easily distracted or confused. Do not fumble with your wallets or bags. Pickpockets search for such easy targets.

Areas where immigrants reside

Even many locals are not happy with the Greek Government’s policy regarding immigrants. In the last years, some central areas of Athens have literally been flooded with immigrants, who are considered by Greek people illegal immigrants. These foreigners along with gypsies are known to practice crimes, mainly pickpocketing tourists and even locals.

The places where immigrants reside are dangerous to pass by during the night. Unfortunately, a young Greek who had just returned home from a trip abroad was thrown off a cliff by a gang of immigrants.

Downtown metropolitan areas and University Campuses

Athens is the often the site of protests. If such events are announced to take place, try to stay clear of Embassy Row, Panepistimou and Syntagma Square. The downside is that these places also include some of the best hotels.

You want to avoid being surrounded by people who take part in such protests. Because you are not of Greek citizenship, police may consider your involvement in demonstrations or strikes as being illegal. These events are more likely to happen during vacations such as Labor Day or on 1st of May and 17th of November.

You can find out about the kind of protests in advance from social media in order to stay out of their path. This could affect your ability to move around Athens or even to travel to and from Greece.

The State Department warns the public that some anarchist groups are known to use student campuses as a refuge. They can be violent and usually gather at the Polytechnic University or in its vicinity. The Aristotle University is another gathering place for them, therefore avoid going there if such groups show up.

Even though media tends to be unsettling, the protests in Greece are civil. Most of the times nobody gets hurt, and usually, the only damage is done to property, instead of other people. If there are a lot of people that show up to protest and the streets become crowded with demonstrators, expect difficulties regarding public transportation and even closures.

El Greco bar and Hollywood bar

There is a classic scam going on the streets of Athens. Around Syntagma Square you may pass by a few elderly men who seem extremely friendly and who will invite you to have a drink with them to the El Greco bar.

They may even go as far as to pay for your drink. However, the drink could be spiked with a drug. They then steal your money and other valuables and disappear. Be wary of this particular bar and watch out if somebody is being too generous in buying you a drink.

Another bar that you may want to avoid if you are a tourist is The Hollywood bar. That place is known to charge insane sums of money for basic drinks. Some tourists claimed that after they have been invited to have some drinks on the house, they have been asked 150 USD for only two drinks.

There is a simple way to avoid this bar scam. Tell the person that is trying to invite you into a shady bar that you are expecting an important message or telephone back at your accommodation. Also, add that he is more than welcome to come with you to the hotel and have a drink with you there. He will not come.

Crowded and narrow places

The easiest places for you to get pick-pocketed by thieves are the metro, the public buses, in the line at the Acropolis and even looking at the flights’ board when you are in the airport. If someone bumps into you in a crowded place, chances are they already have stolen your wallet or smartphone.

A good countermeasure against pickpockets is to use a decoy wallet, that is visible out of one of your pockets and of course, empty. Thieves will go after the decoy and after they steal it, they will immediately get away from you, leaving you safe and with all your valuables still in your possession.

In some places, the sidewalk becomes more narrow. For example, when walking down a street, you are forced to pass between a periptero, which is a kiosk-newsstand, and a fridge that contains drinks, or a postcard display.

That tight spot is ideal for a pickpocket to steal from you. They are extremely skillful when unzipping backpacks, as well. One person claimed that he came back to his hotel room and only then saw that every zipper on his backpack was open.

5 places to avoid in Miami

Miami always seems like a fun idea thanks to its beautiful beaches and exciting nightlife. There are a million places to see and to do in a city like Miami, so if you’re planning a trip there anytime soon, you will not regret it.

However, just as with any other major tourist attraction in this world, Miami is not all milk and honey. And, although the crime rate seems to have dropped in the past few years, there are still plenty of dangerous places you should stay away from.

  1. Liberty City

If you’re a tourist looking for a bargain, the flea market in Liberty City may be the worst idea ever. There are plenty of theft and robbery reports around that place, and the entire neighborhood is unsafe unless you know your way around.

If you feel like living on the edge and testing your limits, you can take a short walk in Liberty City, as long as you try to blend in. This means avoiding flashing out your goods, including jewelry, expensive tech, and the latest GoPro accessories for traveling enthusiasts.

  1. Bayside Harbor

The place is perfect for people who want to rent boats and yachts or enjoy the nightlife this city has to offer. Unfortunately, where there is fun, there are also plenty of pickpockets, thieves, and robbers. We suggest avoiding this place as it is crowded with con artists and criminals who can easily spot out tourists.

Again, if you still consider visiting this part of Miami, be aware of all the dangers. Try to act like a local and keep your belongings with you at all times.

  1. Miami Beach

Miami Beach is to Miami what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris, so not going there at least once is inconceivable. Up until recently, this famous part of the city was considered the most dangerous one.

This changed in the past few years thanks to the booming real estate market. Now, Miami Beach is full of luxury condos and high-end restaurants. Unfortunately, this place is not only frequented by tourists and businesspeople, but also by plenty of robbers, drug dealers, and criminals.

You can safely walk around the crowded streets in the daytime, but it would be better to play it safe at night. Don’t go out alone, especially if you are a girl, and never wear revealing clothes or flashy accessories. Women are the easiest targets so you might want to watch your back, especially if you plan on partying up until the morning.

  1. Overtown

Originally named the Colored Town, this neighborhood is on the no-list of locals. We let you figure out why it was called like that, considering that it was also the home of the largest African-American community of the city.

Although things have changed and the neighborhood has started growing, there is no denying that it still confronts with increased crime rate and unemployment.

Once Miami’s very center of commerce, Overtown experienced a critical economic decline starting with the 1950s. There are still plenty of things to do and numerous attractions for tourists, but the place remains crowded with shady people of all nationalities.

  1. Downtown

Although voted the safest neighborhood in Miami, Downtown should be avoided out of obvious reasons – it is filled with overpriced restaurants, and you can’t seem to find a right place to stay for a decent price.

Sure, the crime rate is low, and you’ll get to see one of the city’s most impressive buildings and business centers, but unless you are willing to drop a lot of cash, Downtown is not the right place for you.

Where not to go in Savannah

Savannah is considered the “Hostess City of the South” as it has been voted many times as one of the most beautiful cities in America. Here you can visit lots of mansions and historical places, as the Historic District is the center of attention. The Historic District has been kept intact because of one wise decision of a former mayor of Savannah – when General Sherman got into town, in 1864, the mayor at the time offered him the city so as the general wouldn’t burn it down.

Therefore, Savannah can offer you sights of antebellum architecture that has been untouched over the years.

But as with every beautiful city, it also has its bad sides. So, in the following paragraphs, we’ll tell you which places you’d want to avoid while visiting Savannah.

River Street

This zone, especially the river area should be avoided during the night, as it can get crowded pretty fast. Moreover, if you happen to be in Savannah on St. Patrick’s day, you should definitely keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. While people here are generally calm and welcoming, at holidays, situations can become uncontrollable.

However, if the night is silent, you can freely have a walk on River Street and watch the boats and freighter ships in the distance.

North-West of the Historic District

In general, things in the Historic District are pretty calm, because this is where most of the tourists will be – and it is the most crowded place as well. Here, you can travel by foot without any worries, but traveling to the outskirts of the Historic District, specifically to the North-West, could prove to be dangerous because this area has been deemed as less safe due to recent crime reports.

This is why it’s recommended that you take a cab or rent a car if you want to travel and see more areas of the town. Moreover, if you happen to have a dog that is sometimes a runner, you might want to get him or her a GPS dog tracker on and proceed to track the pup down while in a vehicle if the pet has wandered too far away – like in shady neighborhoods and low-populated areas.

West Savannah – Louisville Road

As with our previous entry, this part of the city has also been deemed as being less safe due to recent reports of crimes that have been committed in this area. According to statistics, Savannah has been marked by 1,944 counts of theft and 370 counts of burglary in the past year.

Any area that doesn’t look like it’s for tourists

Since crime rates are not to be overlooked, it is recommended that you – as a tourist – stay away from the slums and outskirts of Savannah. Basically, you’d want to avoid any place that doesn’t look tourist-safe. This includes the South, on Elisabeth or 37th – here is recommended that you have a ride straight from your hotel or have a cab to take you through this area. Industrial districts are also not recommended – after all, there’s nothing for you to see there.

The places you are looking for are Forsyth Park, the river to Anderson, and MLK. Also, to ensure your safety, make sure that you are able to see police officers – either on foot, bicycle, or horseback – especially in the Historic District. Not being able to see any of them means that you’ve gone too far into the city and you should return to a safer place.

These were the places that you should avoid going into or where you have to be very careful – that if you want to see some of them. But, as stated before, most parts of the town that are meant for tourists are entirely safe and shouldn’t pose any danger to your holiday.

Top 5 most dangerous cities in the U.S.

If you have decided to go on a tour of the most appealing cities in the United States, but you don’t want to put your life at risk while doing so, this list of dangerous cities in the U.S. might come in handy. So, take a good look at it and start re-organizing your next trip!

Although you might have heard that the crime rates in Detroit have decreased, this city is still one of the most violent places out there. However, it is worth saying that the unsafe areas in this city are usually located far from the tourist attraction sector.

In this town, one should pay attention to pickpockets and bag snatchers as they are quite numerous, even in tourist attraction locations and in the means of public transportation. The chance to get mugged in Detroit is medium. Still, usually, most of those that fall victim to muggers are not physically hurt if they cooperate with their assailant.

Last but not least, while here, pay attention to scammers. Also, you should always withdraw money from well-known banks and hotels, so that the risk of you being the victim of a credit card scam is avoided.

As the largest city in Maryland, Baltimore is another tourist-attractive city that is not particularly very safe. According to the specialists, this town is safe to visit during the day, just as long as you stick to the central areas around the harbor. However, keep in mind that, at night, the downtown area is well known for its various crimes.

As expected, in Baltimore, pickpocketing and purse snatching are quite common, as thieves usually target tourist locations as well as public transportation. The prospect of you being the victim of a scam is also quite high, which is a reason why you should not trust those asking you for help.

Another city that you should be careful when visiting is Boston. As one of the most famous towns in the U.S., Boston is filled with attractions that are worth visiting, but all those that consider doing so should also pay attention to their own safety.

From this point of view, you should know that most crimes that occur here are drug-related. While here, you should avoid non-central areas that are prone to such activities. What is more, the risk of running into pickpockets is medium, and, with a little bit of caution, you should be fine.

Additionally, we recommend that you pay attention to scammers. Besides, the public transportation in this city is generally safe and reasonably priced.

The house of blues music, Memphis is another tourist destination that some consider dangerous. This city is famous because this is where Graceland, the home of Elvis, is located. Similarly to the other places that we have talked about, the city of Memphis is generally safe if you stay in the central area. Therefore, if you avoid the marginal crime-ridden neighborhoods, you should be fine.

Still, it is worth noting that in this city there are numerous pickpockets. Because of this, it is advisable that you keep your belongings in a safe place and away from view. The risks of terrorist attacks here are low.

On top of that, although the best way to travel in Memphis is by car, the specialists have determined that the public transportation services in the town are safe. Yet, you should pay attention to muggers, especially during the night.

Last but not least, the Windy City is also a location that you should visit with caution. Although the city per se is overall safe, there are plenty of rough neighborhoods that you should avoid visiting. Differently to other places, the chance of having your belongings stolen by pickpockets here is not that high.

However, Chicago is home to many muggers. Because of this, you should show precaution before displaying your belongings in public. Although the city has not been targeted by terrorist groups recently, you should stay alert to what the authorities recommend.

Even more so, if you are a woman, you will be happy to know that Chicago is safe for female travelers. Also, before you book your next flight here, go online and check the weather as Chicago is occasionally hit by blizzards.

Zika places to avoid

The Zika virus, also known as ZIKV is an infection that is carried by mosquitoes and causes an illness that is usually very mild; in some cases, it can even be asymptomatic. The name comes from the place where this virus was first isolated in the year 1947: The Zika Tropical Forest in Uganda.

Since then, this virus has been known to appear in countries close to the Equator, thus spreading in the shape of a belt around the Globe. Starting from Africa, it reached Asia at first, then it reached over the Pacific Ocean into to American continent.

One of the reasons that the Zika virus has been of so much concern lately is not due to the infection itself, but rather due to the late consequences on patients, more specifically, pregnant women experience.

Travel destination to avoid

The main locations you should avoid if you are concerned about coming in contact with the Zika virus include but are not limited to: Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, all of Central Africa, Bangladesh, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Maldives, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cuba, Fiji, etc.

All these countries and areas are situated around the Equator and all have reported cases of Zika infections within their territory.

Pregnant women

Zika virus infection during pregnancy causes congenital abnormalities that affects the fetus. One of the most common defects that fetuses develop when the mother is infected with the Zika virus is microcephaly.

Among other severe birth defects, this one affects the newborn’s brain and can be related to other problems such as stillbirth or miscarriage. Another sickness linked to this virus is the Guillain-Barré syndrome, which affects the nervous system.

How to prevent Zika

Unfortunately, in terms of a vaccine, there is none existent at the moment to stop the Zika infection. The best method to prevent this sickness from spreading is to stop the mosquitos from reaching you. Protect yourself from mosquito bites by wearing shirts with long sleeves and long pants. Besides covering up any exposed skin, you could try to acquire pre-treated gear or clothes or to treat what you are wearing yourself.

Use sprays that contain insect repellent substances and follow the instructions on the labels. If used properly, these products are proven to be safe for pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding.

Take care when using such sprays around small children and infants, since some of these items contain chemicals that are not suited for children under the age of 3 and none are suited to be used on babies under 2 months old.

Use door and window screens in your home in order to keep the mosquitos out and install an air conditioning unit. When going outside, you can cover baby carriers and strollers with mosquito netting. Use the same type of protection for yourself if you plan on sleeping outside.

Avoid having sexual contact or use a condom in order not to get infected with the Zika virus or to stop spreading it if you or your partner recently traveled to an area with potential risk. The time needed for you to use these preventive methods depends on a few factors such as whether you or your partner show any symptoms and whether one of you is, or trying to get pregnant.

After returning home

Even if you’re not feeling any discomfort at all after you have returned home from a country which has the risk of Zika, you should still take steps towards preventing mosquitoes from biting your skin for at least 3 weeks. This way, if you are infected, at least you will prevent the virus from spreading.

It is extremely important that you talk to your doctor in the following cases: you have symptoms after returning from a location with a known Zika risk; you are pregnant and just have returned from such an area, even if you don’t feel bad; you are thinking about becoming pregnant after a trip to a country with a known Zika risk.

What to do if you have Zika

As mentioned before, there is no specific treatment or vaccine for the Zika virus. Treat the symptoms according to the following methods:

  • Sleep more; give your body the chance to rest.
  • In order to prevent dehydration drink more water.
  • Take acetaminophen against fever and joint pain.
  • In the case that you are already following treatment for another condition, talk to your doctor prior to taking new medication.

Zika and animals. What we know.

  • The way Zika virus spreads among people is primarily through infected mosquitoes’ bites.
  • Apart from humans, only apes and monkeys can be infected with Zika. Afterward, these animals may experience mild sickness and fever.
  • Pets such as dogs, cats, birds have not been reported as becoming infected with the Zika virus.
  • As far as current studies suggest, mosquitoes are the only animals that contribute to the spread of the virus.
  • There is no proof that the virus can spread to people from animals through interactions like touching, licking, coughing or sneezing.

In some parts of Africa and South America, mosquitoes could become vectors (get infected) by feeding on the blood of apes or monkeys infected with Zika. Those mosquitoes could then pass the virus to a human, although there is a small chance of that happening.

Currently, more research is required in order for us to better understand how apes and monkeys may spread Zika among humans. Although we do not have a vaccine yet, researchers are working on one and hopefully, it will not be long until they get a breakthrough.

It is not hard to stay away from this infection as a tourist, even if you visit some of the countries mentioned at the beginning of this article. All you have to do is be cautious and protect yourself mainly from mosquitoes during your trip and for a few weeks after you return.

Top 5 dangerous places in Florida

If you’re planning a trip to Florida either because you’ve never been or you’re considering retiring there in the upcoming years, it might be a good idea to make a list of places you can go to and those you should avoid. Even if the United States is generally considered a somewhat safe place, there are cities or areas you should steer clear of, and some of them are located in the great state of Florida.

While we don’t advise you to check out these destinations, we would like to make it clear that we don’t have anything against them or the people who live there. However, they might not make the best choice for those who travel alone, are women, or know little to nothing with regard to what they’re supposed to avoid in these parts.

Daytona Beach

Despite its incredible sights, this city scores as one of the most dangerous ones in Florida and the whole of the United States of America. It’s got an appalling crime rate and violent ones are more or less frequent. In fact, one in every three crimes is violent in this location.

On top of everything, Daytona Beach has an annual crime rate of 76 cases out of 1000 people, so it appears that it’s less safe than 98% of all other cities in the United States right now.

There are two main reasons you could consider going to Palatka, and they are the fact that here’s where the Florida Azalea Festival takes place annually and the town has a somewhat small population of just 10,000 individuals. If you think that this low number is what makes it safe, you’re mistaken, though.

It has practically no social life at all, but what makes it risky is that every year over 600 crimes are reported despite the 10,000 residents living their life in the town. 58 crimes per 1,000 people is a lot, so it’s only safer than roughly 4% of the country. If you’re wondering about the high crime rate, it might be useful for you to know that Palatka has one of the highest unemployment rates in the States and it is higher than the national average.

This is another small city you might want to avoid. The poverty in the area is what drives people to crime, and even though violent ones are less prevalent compared to other areas in Florida, you might get mugged or threatened if you decide that visiting Immokalee is a risk you might want to take.

Eighty-five percent of those who live here do not speak English, which is another reason for the heavy unemployment issue. Teenage pregnancy and delinquency are common in this town, and that’s because a third of its whole population is aged under 18. Besides, only 3 to 4% of those who live in Immokalee have a bachelor’s degree.

Fort Pierce

Based on the number of reported crimes that we came across, it appears that the likelihood of you becoming a victim of one in this city is 1 to 17. While it might be less violent compared to other Florida destinations, there are several issues that the town should have to address in order for it to become an attractive tourist location.

For one, only 13% of those aged twenty-five or older have a Bachelor’s degree. At the time this article was written, there was no company owned by Asians or African Americans in the area, which should give you a pointer as to what other issues the city might be suffering from.

Miami Beach

Probably the most dangerous place in the entirety of Florida, Miami Beach certainly doesn’t seem risky at all if you were to consider its breathtaking views. But the fact of the matter is that both the rape rate and the violent crime rates here are more than double the national average.

Both property crime and thefts are more than three times the value of the national average. So if you want to travel to Miami Beach all by yourself and you’re carrying your valuables with you, you’d better think again. If you do have friends living there, you could hit them up so that they go along on your quests. You might even want to enjoy yourself on a griddler party in their company, who knows?

Top 5 most dangerous cities in California

California is a great place to live, hence its nearly 40 million residents. It is the most populated state in the US and the third largest by area. With its sunny beaches and warm temperatures, Cali attracts millions of tourists per year, generating a total economy of nearly 3 trillion dollars.

Cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Palm Springs or Oakland, although very popular destinations, also tend to have a high crime rate and may not be considered as the safest places to start a family. And if you want to learn more about the high crime rate in the California area, here are the top five cities you should probably avoid.

Oakland is consistently voted as one of the most dangerous cities in the United States, with a high crime rate. And, with a violent crime rate of over 1,600 per 100,000 residents (according to Forbes statistics), you may not even enjoy a beach tent family vacation here.

On a more positive note, the rate of property crime has declined in the past few years so you’ll have a better chance of living without being assaulted or robbed if you don’t leave the house at all.

It may come as a surprise, but a city with a total population of just 12,000 inhabitants has the second largest crime rate in the state of California. Home of the Pixar Studios, Emeryville is located east of San Francisco and north of Oakland.

However, unlike Oakland, the high rates of property crime might make you feel safer on the streets than in the comfort of your own house. In the city of Emeryville, there is a chance of 1 in 7 to be the victim of a crime.

The good news is that the violent crime number has declined in the past five years, but we think that it’s still not safe to move there unless you score an excellent job and can afford a great security system.

Santa Cruz

With a population of just a little over 60,000 inhabitants, the city is known for its breathtaking landscapes, alternative community lifestyles, and the beautiful coastline.

Unfortunately, this city also has one of the highest crime rates in California for medium and large-sized cities. Violent crime rates and property crime rates are both at high levels, and it seems like the police cannot do much to stop that. Besides, Santa Cruz struggles with a high homelessness rate, with over 9,000 estimated people not having a place to stay.

According to official FBI statistics, the city of Commerce is ranked as one of the most violent in California. With little over 13,000 people living there, this small city southeast of sunny Los Angeles deals with a high rate of property crime. Although the rates have decreased since 2016, there is still a long way ahead until Commerce becomes a safe city to live in.

Los Angeles

Although much safer than it used to be two decades ago, Los Angeles deserves the fifth place in our top due to a large number of crimes occurred in communities of all sizes and nationalities.

The City of Angels also faced national concerns as the LAPD revealed in 2015 that it had been under-reporting crimes on purpose over the past eight years. So, as much as you would want to grab your tanning lotions and facial moisturizers and head off to one of the city’s sunny beaches, it would probably be safer to move to other cities.
